SCR Clinic – Our Clinic's Journey to Today’s Practice

This month, on the SCR Clinic blog, we wanted to share a little bit about our own story and how we’ve grown into the practice we are today.

SCR Clinic has been in existence, in different guises since 1923. Over those long years, we have seen many sets of teeth and helped thousands of patients improve their oral health. We are lucky to hold a stellar reputation around Dublin as a well-established dental practice, that puts our patient’s first and that people trust. But such a reputation doesn’t come about overnight. There have been lots of people involved in growing the practice and today, we’re going to look at how Maria, a dental assistant came to become owner and managing director of SCR Clinic.

The current owner and manager of SCR Clinic, Maria Kinch, began working with David Neligan, a well-liked and trusted dentist in Dublin 8. While there, Maria proved herself as a dental assistant and Dr. Neligan saw Maria’s potential. She was a hard worker, with a great knack for making patients feel at ease. It was under his guidance that Maria found the courage to return to education and become a qualified dental nurse. Although she didn’t know it at the time, this was the first step to a long and rewarding career in the dental field.

Dr. Neligan trusted Maria to work alongside him for many years. She looked after his loyal patients who enjoyed the personal touch that Dr. Neligan brought to his practice. For Maria, the best part of the job was working with those patients who felt very self-conscious about their mouth and avoided the dentist until such time as they were left with no choice but to make an appointment. Through working with these patients, helping them to see that there was nothing to worry about and that the dentist would do their absolute best for them, these patients gained trust in the dental practice, attended more often and restored their mouth to full health and their beautiful smile to what it should have been all along.

Maria recalls, ‘I loved seeing how patient’s confidence grew as they took control of their dental health. They started to see things that might have held them back
in life as challenges to be overcome now that they saw that they had the power to change things for themselves. It might seem strange to put this experience down to dentistry, but our smile is such a big part of our appearance, we really shouldn’t underestimate it.’

After sixteen years, working as a dental nurse alongside Dr. Neligan and Robert Gilbourne, who had come together in the intervening years, Maria was presented
with an opportunity she couldn't believe! The time had come for Dr. Neligan and Dr. Gilbourne to pass the management of their practice onto someone else.

Instead of choosing another dentist to take over the running of the practice that they had built up over years with hard work and determination, they decided that Maria was the best person for the job. Although it was unusual for a dental nurse to run a practice, never mind one of this size, Dr. Neligan and Dr. Gilbourne were satisfied that they had chosen the right person.

Maria says, ‘I was given a huge opportunity to take over the practice that I had loved and valued for years. It was incredible! The trust these two men had in me to take over their practice and carry on what they started many, many years ago was such a proud moment in my life. I owe both of them a lot for the belief they had in me. There was many a time when they saw potential in me that I couldn’t have seen if it was right under my nose. I am very lucky in that regard.’

SCR Clinic is a large practice serving patients from Dublin city centre as well as the neighbouring postcodes of Dublin 6, 8 and 12. The practice had always been managed by experienced dentists, but with the guidance of David Neligan and Robert Gilbourne and their unwavering trust, Maria found the confidence to step into the role of owner and manager.

Today, under Maria’s watchful eye, the practice continues to thrive. At SCR Clinic, we have a very low staff turnover, the practice is a warm, welcoming place where staff and patients alike feel relaxed and at home. The whole team feel valued and transfer that sense of work satisfaction to the high standard of care they deliver to all our patients. Maria is delighted to still be able to work with patients who have been attending the clinic for many years. She loves the personal connection and does her best to embed this in all the work that SCR Clinic does. As she says, ‘at SCR Clinic, we’re all like a big family! Patients are always commenting on how friendly and relaxed they feel when they arrive for their appointment. That’s the way it should be if you ask me.’
